Performing as a professional musician since 1984. He started his own groups with his colleague and friend, trumpeter Jarmo Hoogendijk as co-leader: Van den Dungen/Hoogendijk Quintet (contemporary Hard-Bop) and later on the group Brand New Orleans (Modern Jazz with African percussion). With these groups they were touring freqently through whole Europe.
In 1986 he joined the latin jazz group Nueva manteca. The group recorded since then 10 albums en toured several times in the USA , Canada and through the Caribean. ( Puerto Rico, Trinidad and the Dutch Antilles) and South America (Colombia).
Getting more and more interested in Worldmusic he start studying Indian classical music in Mumbai what resulted in a recording with Dutch and Indian musicians named "How to be Enlightened".
Joined in 2002 the group Quinteto Tango Extremo. The music of this band is based on Tango Nuevo but is also influenced by Classical, Jazz and Brasilian music. This year they do a programm with the grammy award winner Gustavo Mozzi called "Carnaval de Buenos Aires".
Played futhermore with: Cindy Blackman (Lenny Kravitz), Mal Wladron, Art Taylor, Woody Shaw, Jimmy Knepper, Kirk Lightsey, Lester Bowie and Jim McNeely.
In concerts by Nueva Manteca and The Cu-bop City Big Band he shared the stage with Giovanni Hidalgo, Nicky Marrero, Luis conte, Orestes Vilato, Armando Peraza, Juancito Torres, Edy Martinez, Armando "Chocolate Armenteros", Bobby Sanabria, Claudio Roditi, Ralph Irizarry, Paquito Rivera, John Bennites, Michel Camillo, Bobby Carcases and Oscarito Valdez.
Teaching
He is artistic director of the Jazz Academy of the conservatorium of Rotterdam. Also teaching saxophoon, music bussiness and ensemble playing.

Lectures in-depht about musical content and about the musical business.
Introduced a new curriculum at the Academies of Music in Rotterdam and Groningen: "Business Management for Musicians".
Initiates and coordinates off-campus activities for students like the annual Academy of Music Rotterdam Jazz festival, inviting famous guest soloist from all over Europe to participate and many other activitys including the Rotterdam Symphonic Jazz Orchestra.
Co-produces recordings of student performances.
Initiated together with Codarts and Hein van de Geyn, from 2006, the Codarts Jazz Summerschool.
